Lemonfish Art Gallery
Enjoy the art and culture of The Gambia with a trip to the Lemonfish Art Gallery, located in the unspoilt fishing village of Kartong near the border with Senegal.
The gallery was launched in March 2005 and is situated on a hill surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, making it a great place to relax as well as sample the art and culture of the country.
The idea behind the project was to provide artists of all types with a forum to both exhibit and sell their works.
There are two large halls and a veranda where various exhibitions and special events are held regularly throughout the year. These include exhibitions of contemporary African Art, painting, sculpture, objects and, on occasion, music.
The Lemonfish Art Gallery also hosts film events by African film makers, giving you a unique opportunity to experience African art and African culture at the same time.
The gallery also provides a number of workshops and courses in batik, pottery and modelling in clay. You can find out more about these activities on their website.
The gallery does not charge admission fee, but a small donation is much appreciated.
You might also want to consider making a whole day of it by adding one or more of the other activities available at Footsteps Eco-Lodge.
For example, this half day trip combines well with a visit to the the Reptile Centre and/or a trip on the river: only D 2,000 / person when you combine all three (instead of D 3,500 / person when doing them seperately).
