Ladyfish, I’m a ladyfish you know hehe! Catching less of these from the beach these days. They used to be in abundance ten years back but last year I caught only two. However, my lovely guests did better than me ( very rare that ) and caught some nice specimens. Again they don’t seem to be getting as big as they once did. I suppose like everywhere, commercial and illegal overfishing have reduced fish stocks and this shows up for us rod and liners. I should mention that although called a Ladyfish in The Gambia, its correct name is Cassava. Are they good to eat? You bet they are!
When is the best time to catch?
Available all year in The Gambia. They are powerful swimmers and like big spring tides. Wanna go, see our fishing page.
What do they feed on?
They don’t go for lures preferring live bait such as small herring, mullet, & croakers are best. Dead baits you can use with success are a strip of Bonga, also prawn cocktail with Bonga and small squid.
Biggest fish caught in The Gambia?
From the boat and beach ladyfish regularly exceed 17 kilo
Biggest personal best?
My personal best was and is 7 kilo, caught from the beach closest to Footsteps. Ged Brown and Mr T from Gone Fishing Gambia catch these regularly from their boat.
