We invite you to take some time away from your busy schedules and join us on a journey of discovery. Our retreat is a blend of yoga and mindfulness practice that will help you to build strength and flexibility of mind and body. Get introduced to new habits that will have a lasting positive impact on your life.

 

Your Experience during the Week

Between the yoga and mindfulness sessions you will get to know a little about the real Gambia. You will visit inspirational women and gain insight into their lives. These trips bring different perspectives and a chance to gain some experience of this wonderfully diverse culture.

Learn how to cook one of the local dishes with Ida Cham. We will visit a local market in Tanje where we will buy all the ingredients together. Afterwards, we cook together whilst listening to her inspiring story. Later in the week we will learn about the Women’s Initiative. A group of women led by Isatou Ceesay. These ladies are doing great work turning waste into ‘must have products’.

Join us on a one and a half hour coastal walk south to Gunjur. Along the way we stop for yoga and mindfulness on the beach culminating in a delicious lunch with breathtaking view of Gunjur’s fishing centre.

 

Yoga and Mindfulness

 

Mindfulness is the experience of being open and aware in the present moment, bringing a sense of compassion, curiosity and playfulness to our lives. Mindfulness meditation is the practice of training the mind so we are able to be mindful in our everyday activities.

Yoga in Sanskrit means ‘union’,  the union of body, mind and spirit. Our yoga sessions are a playful mix of Vinyasa Flow with restorative elements. It will build strength, flexibility and help you to relax and deepen your self awareness.

Our beautiful Yoga Shala is the perfect place for meditation and yoga practice. Set in its own grounds with mature trees, flowers and an abundance of birdlife making it easy to relax, unwind and connect with nature. This connection with nature is an important part of our week and makes The Gambia an ideal location for this retreat.

With a small group our aim is to create a supportive, friendly and informal atmosphere. The programme is designed around you. Our retreat is suitable for beginners who have never tried yoga or mindfulness, as well as those who have some experience.

Jo Heath, Meditation & Mindfulness

Jo is a senior leader in the public sector working in the environmental field for over 25 years. A qualified lecturer, Jo has been involved in developing and supporting people through coaching and mentoring throughout her career. Mindfulness has had a huge influence on her own life and she is excited to be able to share her experience with others. Jo has been a mindfulness practitioner for over 5 years and is a certified mindfulness teacher.

Linda Veråsdal, Yoga

Linda is the founder and team leader at Ethical Travel Portal, a tour operator that specialises in crafting personalised holidays to various destinations around the Globe. One of her main destinations and her home for several months of the year is Footsteps in The Gambia.  Linda has been practicing yoga for over seven years and is a certified Hatha Vinyasa Flow teacher from  Himalayan Yoga Bliss in Darjeeling, India. Linda teaches  a playful Vinyasa Flow with elements of restorative yoga.

Yoga

Day 1: Arrival The Gambia

Welcome to The Gambia and our Yoga and Mindfulness Retreat at Footsteps Eco-Lodge! On arrival, you will be picked up from Banjul International Airport and transferred to Gunjur in Gambia’s South Kombo coastal region, your home for the next seven days.  In the afternoon, after getting to know each other we will enjoy our first yoga and mindful session to get the whole week started.

  • Including pick up and transfer to the lodge, short yoga stretch, accommodation

Day 2: Yoga and Mindfulness

Wake up to birdsong and enjoy some local tea and fruits before heading to the yoga shala for our first formal morning session. You have the day to explore the area before we start up again in the afternoon.

Day 3: Meet Ida and Learn how to Cook a Local Dish

Today we change the morning session to an earlier breakfast before we head off to Ida´s place for some local cooking. Ida will take us to a local Market in Tanje where we buy our ingredients to create a truly authentic Gambian home cooked meal. Back at her place, we cook while listening to her inspiring story. After our feast, we head back to the lodge our yoga and mindfulness session before dinner.

Day 4: Yoga and Mindfulness

Wake up to birdsong and enjoy a coffee or tea with some fruit before heading to the yoga shala for our first formal morning session. You have the day to explore the area before we start up again in the afternoon.

Day 5: Meet Isatou and Learn how to Turn Trash into Cash

Today, breakfast before heading out to meet Isatou Ceesay and The Women’s Initiative Gambia. The Initiative helps  women in The Gambia to improve their skills and income  raising the standard of living for their families and their communities. One way of achieving that is to reduce, reuse and recycle waste into product. After our visit, we head back to the lodge for one yoga and mindfulness session before dinner.

Day 6: Beach Walk

Wake up to birdsong and enjoy a coffee or tea with some fruit before heading to the yoga shala for our first formal morning session with sumptuous  breakfast to follow. Today we invite you to enjoy a one and half hour beach walk south to Gunjur Fishing Village. We will practice yoga and mindfulness on the way and on arrival be welcomed by a lovely lunch!

Day 7: Yoga and Mindfulness

Your last full day! Get some coffee or tea with some fruit before heading to the yoga shala for our first formal morning session. You have the day to explore the area before starting up again in the afternoon for a final session. This evening is our last and will be filled with celebration, dinner and entertainment.

Day 8: Departure Gambia

Your final day is here! Time to wrap up, say goodbye to your new Gambian friends and get ready for your departure back home.
